Where Has All the Love Gone?

“Don’t you ever say I just walked away
I will always want you
I can’t live a lie, running for my life
I will always want you”

Those are some of the lyrics to Miley Cyrus’s “Wrecking Ball.” Now, I have a problem with these lyrics. I want to begin by explaining that I really do like the song. The video, not so much. But, there was just something that bothered me about that song the first time I heard it, and it’s still bothering me. For a while, I couldn’t figure it out. Then I heard it:

“Don’t you ever say I just walked away
I will always want you”

Do you see it? It’s the second line. Normally, I wouldn’t even think about it, but I noticed it because I sang it wrong. What I thought it was going to say was, I will always love you. What the line actually says is, I will always want you. Want, not love. That was the problem, and it’s been bugging me for weeks.

You see, it made me think. Where is the love? Because I haven’t seen any in a long time. These days, with my generation, no one is looking for love. They’re not looking for long term. All they look for is short term relief for their wants. It’s all about want.

Marriages fall apart because of want. Children are abandoned because of want. People are hurt, broken, and jaded all because of want.

The thing about want is that it is temporary. Our wants flit in and out of our minds randomly. Another problem with want is that want makes everything into an object, just a thing to be desired, not something to be cherished. That becomes a problem when the thing you want is a person. People are, well, personal. They aren’t objects.

Love word

Love is different. To quote the Bible, “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud” (NIV). Love, true love, is never temporary. It’s enduring, “until death do us part.” Love is something that we as human beings need, not just something we want.

I like this. I was totally ready to disagree and be all like “I don’t know what your talking about, those lyrics are great, I totally understand, blah blah blah blah blah”, but then I read the rest….wow am I glad I did xD This is an awesome point on how society is today. It’s actually reeeally stupid.
And then you wonder, out of all those people who want temporary love, who wants real and permanent love?
